A 1997 Gibson ES-335 Dot in stunning Cherry Red finish, in very good condition and an absolute joy to play. This is one of those guitars that immediately reminds you why the ES-335 became such a legendary instrument — warm, articulate, resonant, and effortlessly versatile. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, classic rock, soul, indie, or anything in between, this guitar delivers the unmistakable semi-hollow Gibson tone with all the character and depth you’d hope for from a well-kept late-90s example. The ESDTCHNH production code denotes a Gibson ES-335 Dot in Cherry from the Nashville factory, and this guitar is a fantastic representation of that era of Gibson production. These late-90s Nashville-built ES models have developed a strong following for their build quality, feel, and consistency, and this one absolutely delivers.
The Cherry Red finish has aged beautifully over the years, developing the kind of rich vintage look that only comes with time. The guitar has clearly been cared for and remains in very good overall condition, especially for a nearly 30-year-old instrument. It shows honest signs of use and age in all the right places, giving it a tasteful played-in feel without abuse or neglect. The neck feels fantastic in the hand, and while the frets show some minor signs of wear, the guitar plays cleanly all the way up the board with low, comfortable action.
Electronics work exactly as they should, delivering everything from smooth woody cleans to rich overdriven tones with incredible clarity and sustain. The pickups have that classic ES-335 voice — airy and open, yet focused and punchy when pushed. It’s equally at home through a clean combo or a cranked valve amp.
Included is the original Gibson hard case, which is wonderfully roadworn and full of vintage character. The case has clearly travelled over the years and wears its scars proudly, but it still does its job perfectly and suits the guitar beautifully. Together, they make for a classic package with real presence and history.
This is a superb player’s guitar that also has all the visual charm and vibe collectors look for in a well-aged ES-335. These late-90s Gibsons continue to gain appreciation for their build quality and feel, and this one is an especially strong example.
